Getting Started With Running

Every now and then I make up my mind and try to be a regular at gym. The gym in our Sriram Spandhana Apartment is well equipped and is absolutely free for all the residents. We even have (or at least had when I went the last time) a trainer in the gym to guide and help up. It was only about finding the time and motivation which are too difficult unless either you have someone to go to gym with or have set a goal for yourself, which I never did. But this post is not about my irregular gym schedule.

A lot of people around me run – Sameera, DU and Vikas to just name a few. And running makes them feel good and happy. This one day we were all talking and DU told us about Nike + Running app that he uses to keep track of his runs. I too downloaded the app and added DU as a friend. And then it all happened so suddenly. Seeing DU clock 10kms in a day gave me the motivation to run too. I have also added Sameera in the app and I look forward to competing with them for the distance run every week and month.

I’ve already covered 19 km in 6 runs. Leading Sameera, but then she doesn’t log all her runs.

I had really old shoes – I bought them in 2009 I guess when Rohit and I were living in Spandhana together and were trying to learn tennis. My shoes were really old and they hurt my feet a little when I ran on the road. Sameera has been running for years – at least since her college days when she used to run ~8km everyday – and so it was obvious that I asked her for shoes suggestion. Now I am an Adidas person (sponsors of Chelsea duh!) while Sameera is a Nike girl. She took me to a Nike store to select a new running shoe for me. We liked two – Nike Free 5.0 which was extremely lightweight and the Nike Air Max which was ridiculously expensive! Luckily the store had a 2014 edition Air Max which, after a cool discount of 40%, cost almost as much as the Nike Free. We picked Nike Air Max – the Black and Orange shoe as in the Featured Image. I love my shoe. Thanks a lot Sameera.

Have signed up for the 10K beginner training to keep myself motivated. I am on schedule so far.

To keep myself motivated I have selected the 8-week 10km training in Nike + Running. The first week was mostly about getting started – brisk walking, alternating walk + run and cross training. Not having run more than 2 km on a treadmill ever I was breathless the first time I had to cover 4.8km. It took me ~35 minutes! But today’s 6.4km was lot more comfortable. I think I am going to enjoy running.

I was completely exhausted after the 4.8 km run.
6.7 km run map and details.
This is the longest I have ever run in my lifetime. And I still can’t believe that I completed it.
